Canals in Amsterdam
What would Rome be without the Coliseum? And from Amsterdam without channels? Undoubtedly the most remarkable thing about Amsterdam is its great river system, historically much larger than Venice.
The total length of the Amsterdam canal system is 75 kilometers and gives rise to more than 1000 bridges. In the canals live thousands of families in the more than 2,500 floating houses.
As curiosity, the vaults of the National Bank of Holland are in the depth of the channels. In case of alarm, a flood will end the threat.
Grachtengordel
With a name difficult to pronounce, Grachtengordel is the denomination of the ring of the three most important channels of Amsterdam. It was designed in the 17th century to support the increase of population.
The three channels that compose it are denominated, from outside to inside, Prinsengracht, Keizersgratch and Herengracht. The most striking channel of the three is the smaller, Herengracht, on its banks you will find some of the most beautiful mansions in the city.
Boat ride on canals
Something always recommended for any traveler is to appreciate Amsterdam from the water. You will find several companies that realize different types of cruises by the channels, including walks with dinner or with free bar.
